Kory and Kayla Turner dominated in New York this weekend including Kory bringing home a Championship in Prose and Poetry!
Each year, the second weekend of October marks one of the most prestigious speech and debate tournaments in the United States, The New York City Invitational. Held at the renowned Bronx High School of Science, this tournament featured over 160 speech and debate schools, with thousands of entries this year.
The brother and sister team of Kory ’17 and Kayla ’20 Turner shined over most of the competition. Starting with their Duo Interpretation piece, the team advanced to the semifinals, placing 8th respectively. They excelled in their individual categories as well. Kory placed 9th in Dramatic Interpretation, and received a semifinalist award.
Both the Turners competed in Prose and made it into the next day of competition as well. Kayla finished 16th, and Kory was the champion in this event, beating the second place finisher from Florida.
Lastly, the Turner team finished with some icing on the cake, as they received 8th place overall in Team Sweepstakes. This is extraordinary in that the Turner team were the only two students representing their school, and were able to place in the top ten for a school sweepstakes award. The average number of competitors per school at this tournament was 11, and there were over 160 teams total. It is likely that they’re accomplishment under the circumstances, was unprecedented at the New York City Invitational. Kory and Kayla, represented New England, and our school, very well. Keep up the good work!
