Sacred Heart's art program is geared to all students interested in art. Classes accommodate beginner, intermediate and advanced students so that all students have an opportunity to build on their skills, expand their imagination/ creative thinking and express themselves. An interdisciplinary approach to art, where students make connections and build upon their foundations of art history, general history, literature, science, psychology and culture is encouraged and assisted. Teaching methods incorporate the National Art Education Standards to advance skills, understanding, and creativity.
In addition to their classroom studies, Sacred Heart student artists expand their study outside of the art classroom and often participate in local, state and national art competitions. Students also participate in extra curricular art activities.
Among them:
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Massachusetts Art All-State
The Duxbury Art Complex Student Sculpture Competition & Show
The Plymouth Guild for the Arts Annual Student Arts Competition & Show
The Sacred Heart student art show at the Kingston Public Library
Lingua Franca, Sacred Heart's literary art magazine
The Memory Portrait Project, where students create portraits of children from orphanages around the world
The Sacred Heart Art Club, which also includes art related service-projects
The "End of the Year, Sacred Heart Student Art Exhibition"
Exhibition of work on Sacred Heart's Art Instagram
Sacred Heart Art Shows
Sacred Heart is very proud and supportive of our young artists! Our annual art show, "Through the Looking Class," is held at the Kingston Public Library for the entire month of April. In this show, student artwork is displayed in a public forum where their talent and hard work can reach a wider audience. Artwork from students in grades 9-12 is selected by art teacher, Julie Trahon.
Sacred Heart also has an art show at the end of the school year, here on our beautiful campus. For this event, the school library is transformed into a gallery space where family and friends can gather to appreciate the arts and support our school artists. Artwork for this show is selected by art teacher, Julie Trahon, but all students in grades 7-12 are encouraged to enter their artwork.
Attendees at our final art show of the year are also given an opportunity to vote for their favorite sculpture in the Sacred Heart sculpture competition. The theme alternates each year between "Edible Art" and recycled art sculptures. All students are welcome to enter!
